EPSON Error Code 58
MEDIUMCommon IssueEPSON Error 58: Print Head or Carriage Malfunction
Error 58 on EPSON printers typically indicates a problem with the print head's movement or its connection, often preventing printing.
EPSON Error 58 is a general indicator that the print head assembly, or the carriage it resides in, is experiencing an issue. This could range from a physical obstruction preventing the carriage from moving freely across the platen, to a more complex electronic communication problem between the print head and the printer's main board. The print head needs to move smoothly and precisely to deposit ink onto the paper, and any interference in this process will halt printing and trigger this error. Common causes for Error 58 include foreign objects (like paper clips, torn paper pieces, or even dust bunnies) lodged in the carriage path, dried ink or debris on the encoder strip (a clear strip that helps the printer track the print head's position), or a faulty print head cable. Less commonly, it could point to a failing print head motor or a problem with the main logic board. While often resolvable with simple checks, persistent Error 58 can sometimes signify a component failure requiring professional attention.
- 1
Turn off your EPSON printer and unplug it from the power source for at least 5 minutes to reset its internal systems.
- 2
Open the printer's top cover or access panel to view the print head carriage area. Gently move the print head carriage by hand (if it moves freely) to the center of the printer.
- 3
Carefully inspect the entire path of the print head carriage for any foreign objects, such as paper scraps, staples, or other debris. Remove anything you find using tweezers, being careful not to damage internal components.
- 4
Locate the clear, thin plastic strip (encoder strip) that runs horizontally behind the print head carriage. Gently wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water or isopropyl alcohol.
- 5
Check for any visible damage to the print head cables or connections. Ensure ink cartridges are properly seated and not interfering with carriage movement.
- 6
Close all covers, plug the printer back in, and turn it on. Attempt to print a test page to see if the error has cleared.
If you've followed all the DIY steps and the Error 58 persists, or if you notice any burning smells, unusual noises, or visible damage to internal components that you're uncomfortable addressing, it's time to call a qualified printer technician. This error can sometimes indicate a failed print head, a faulty carriage motor, or a problem with the main logic board, which are components best handled by professionals. Attempting to force parts or disassemble the printer further without proper knowledge can cause more damage.
